Hi Friends,

Today I'd like to talk about the important issue of the past week. You have all undoubtedly been watching the news and the videos surrounding the death of George Floyd. I am sure it has created feelings of extreme upset and outrage in you. You may also feel helpless to do something to take on the enormous problem of systemic racism that has existed for far too long. My own first reaction was to feel both horrified and powerless to tackle such a widespread, critical issue.

But just as I believe we can make positive changes in our personal lives by taking single, doable steps one day at a time, I believe we can begin to make progress on bigger issues by taking real, actionable steps, one day at a time. Our collective outrage will not be worth much if we continue to discuss things, but not do anything. Through our actions we create forward momentum. The positive actions we take impact those around us, who, in turn, may take their own positive step. The ripple effect produced by this string of right actions can begin today, right now, starting with each of us.

Please consider taking one small step toward helping the issue of racism get real traction and momentum, so that it doesn't become just another horrible memory that remains unchanged as we look back some time down the road. You can educate yourself by reading a book or watching a documentary, making a donation of time or money, or perhaps by taking a class.  Whatever feels right for you. By doing just one thing, you are taking that first step to move the needle on an issue that's been with us far too long.

To help you, I have compiled a short list of the actions you can take to begin to tackle this important issue:
  • Some reading on racism: Deep Diversity: Overcoming Us Vs.Them, By Shakil Choudury; White Fragility, By Robin DiAngelo; How To Be An Antiracist, By Ibram X. Kendi
  • Watch a documentary: I Am Not Your Negro, a documentary based on the writings of James Baldwin
  • If you're ready to take action: click here
  • Understanding white privilege: click here
  • Learn about programs, donate or get involved: click here or  visit naacpldf.org
Remember, any step you take is progress.
Speaking for myself, I know I have not taken enough action to address racism in the past. But today is a new day, and feeling bad about ourselves will not effectively correct any situation. You are aware and enlightened women who understand the need for social justice. By taking action against racism and truly supporting this issue, you are, in fact, starting that ripple effect.
As Ghandi said "Be the Change You Want to See."
I know you are capable of assisting in the creation of solutions to big issues by having good intentions and by taking one step at a time. I want you to experience yourself being every bit as powerful as I see you. Pick one or more items from the list above. If you feel moved to do so, to feel the strength and power of making a difference for the greater good.
Hit "reply" and let me know what you plan to do this week to start the ball rolling in your own corner of the world. I am waiting to hear from you!

I thank you for taking time to read this.

Sending you much love and inner peace,

Lori
