Age Is Not a Thing

Hi Friends,
Happy January! (Sent just in time ;-)) ...lol)
Picture
The patriot in me felt compelled to somehow talk about the inauguration this month. As Americans, I believe we are a lucky bunch. Every four years in early November, we have the privilege of voting to decide who will lead our country, and in January we have the opportunity to watch them being sworn into office. Over the years we have experienced a lot of "firsts" on Inauguration Day. In 2008 President Obama became the first African American President, and then in 2016, President Trump became the first President with no prior experience in government.
This month, we also witnessed some important "firsts". At the forefront, Vice President Kamala Harris became the first female and the first person of color to occupy that office. Certainly a big step against gender bias and racism. Excellent. I also thought it was incredible to see two individuals for whom age was not a determining factor in their individual abilities to be outstanding in their respective fields. As a Life Coach who works with women often struggling with perceived limitations related to aging, it was noteworthy to experience the greatness of poet Amanda Gorman and President Joseph Biden. Two individuals on the opposite ends of the age spectrum. She, the youngest inaugural poet at age 22, and he, the oldest president to be sworn in. Two clear examples where quality overshadowed quantity, where (as I like to put it) "age was just not a thing".

Amanda Gorman:
The Youngest Inaugural Poet
Amanda Gorman, at 22 years old, is the first National Youth Poet Laureate, and the youngest performer at this year's inauguration. She published her first book at only 17, and much of her work focuses on issues related to oppression, feminism, and racism. Her inaugural poem "The Hill We Climb" was a beautiful, soulful piece. Despite her age, her performance was mature, poised and graceful.

What Amanda Taught Us About Age
  • Amanda taught us that wisdom is not exclusively a product of age. Although we often call wise children "old souls," Amanda showed us that young people can exhibit great maturity and wisdom.
  • Empathy and intuitive connection to others can present itself at any age. In her short life, she has shown us she can feel the pain and longing of others. She witnessed the violence at the Capitol two weeks before, and captured the country's pain and our need to heal.
  • You can command people's attention at any age if you feel passionate about what you are saying, and feel joy in what you do.
  • Authentic self-expression will always draw an audience.
  • You can inspire others with great words. Use of physical strength is not the only way to be powerful.
  • You can learn the skills you need to accomplish anything you desire. Her excellent writing and speaking abilities likely came from her passion for the tasks, and also from plenty of practice.

Amanda showed that, regardless of age, it is possible to inspire others through self-expression.

President Joseph Biden:
The Oldest American President
President Biden is our oldest American President. He, too, showed us that age is not a factor in one's ability to lead. Though many people have expressed concern about his age, he continued to pursue the position for which he felt uniquely qualified. He believed in himself.

What President Biden Taught Us About Age
  • Belief in oneself is critical. He never gave up, even when others said he was falling too far behind in the primaries.
  • Persistance is required when you want something badly enough. He made many attempts to run for President before he was successful.
  • Knowledge is power. He showed us that what you already know and prior experiences are both very useful. It's not only about knowing the latest thing. All kinds of knowledge is important.
  • Experience is a great teacher. It creates wisdom that serves you throughout your life.
  • Age gives you perspective.  Being older can allow you to step back from some things and move forward on others. Age often allows you to see the relative importance of things going on around you.
  • President Biden has experienced a great deal of pain and loss in his life. He showed us that pain from the past can sometimes be used as fuel. Negative events from your past don't have to stop you from moving forward and reaching lifetime dreams. In fact, these hardships can help motivate you to succeed in the end.
  • President Biden has stayed true to his authentic beliefs in governing. He has shown us that it may get easier to ignore the naysayers, and to stick to one's own agenda. No compare and despair here. In our very competitive world, we should all be better at that!

I truly believe that "age is not a thing", and last week's inaugural ceremony strongly supported that belief. Two inspiring leaders, at very different stages of life, proved that age is not a barrier to being the best version of yourself. By letting go of the mindset that age is an obstacle to pursuing things that are truly your passion, you can reach for your dreams and create the life you desire at any age.
